Setting Up Service for Businesses and Multiunit Properties
Businesses and residences with more than four units can use any City-licensed hauler for waste collection. If you want to become a city-licensed commercial hauler, complete a Commercial Waste Hauler License Application.
Recycling Requirements for Businesses and Multiunit Properties
Dakota County and the City of Hastings have adopted recycling requirements for businesses. All businesses within the city must follow these rules:
- Collect all items listed on the county’s Designated List of Recyclables.
- Make sure the collection schedule and container sizes can handle all recyclables and organics (if collected), without overflowing.
- Put recycling containers no more than 10 feet from each trash container or chute. Make sure both are easy to access.
- Label all containers for trash, recycling, and organics. Follow Dakota County’s rules for labeling.
- Make sure all trash collected is brought to a licensed waste facility.
- Make sure all recycling collected is brought to a recycling facility.
- Make sure all organics (if collected) are brought to a food recovery program, composting facility or anaerobic digester.
- Share waste information with employees, tenants, residents, students, volunteers and housekeeping or custodial staff once a year.
- Share waste information within 30 days of a new hire or tenant.
All multiunit properties must also:
- Provide recycling service to every resident.
- Supply recycling containers that can hold at least 0.1 cubic yards per unit each week.

Dakota County provides free resources to help businesses and organizations reduce waste.
- All businesses in Dakota County can get free recycling, organics and trash container labels. Posters and Recycle Right handouts are also available. Order labels and other educational resources.
- Dakota County offers funding up to $10,000 to eligible businesses and organizations. This money can be used for recycling containers and more.
