Charter Commission

The City of Hastings is a Home Rule Charter City, meaning that the City has adopted a City Charter that outlines how the City governs itself. The Hastings City Charter addresses election issues, Mayor and Council powers and procedures, taxation and finance procedures and other miscellaneous provisions. These provisions are related to official newspapers, acquisition and sale of property.

Purpose and Responsibilities

The Charter Commission is responsible for reviewing and recommending changes to the City Charter. It helps ensure the charter remains a relevant and effective guide for city governance.

  • The Commission consists of 7 to 15 members.
  • Members are appointed for staggered four-year terms.
  • The Commission must meet at least once per calendar year.
  • Members must be qualified voters residing in Hastings.
  • Members may hold any form of employment except a judicial office.

  • The Charter Commission consists of seven (7) appointed members
  • Members serve varied terms to ensure continuity and fresh perspectives
  • All members are residents of Hastings with an interest in government procedures
