Water Conservation
Irrigate Wisely

Water conservation is a shared responsibility and the biggest impact we can make comes from how we irrigate our lawns.

City Ordinance on Water Conservation
Why It Matters
- Irrigation is the #1 use of water in Hastings during the summer.
- Hastings has six municipal wells, only 2–3 are needed for daily water needs. The rest are used just to meet lawn irrigation demand.
- Most lawns need only one inch of water per week. That’s usually less than two waterings, especially if it rains.
Smart Watering Tips
- Install a smart irrigation controller or rain sensor.
- Avoid watering during heat or wind.
- Water in early morning or late evening.
- Mulch around plants to retain moisture.
- Mow your grass higher to shade the soil and reduce evaporation.
Drought Conditions
During periods of moderate, severe or extreme drought, the city may enact additional restrictions or ban non-essential water use.
Please check the city website for updates or special declarations.
Penalties
Violating watering restrictions may result in a citation and fine. Help protect our community’s water supply by following the rules.
