Illicit Storm Water Runoff

Help Keep Our Water Clean. What Is Illicit Runoff?

Illicit storm water runoff means something other than rainwater is going into storm drains — things like oil, gas, paint or chemicals. These drains go straight to our rivers, lakes and wetlands, with no treatment. That means whatever enters the drain pollutes our water.

Some common examples:

  • Dumping paint or oil into the gutter
  • Washing lawn chemicals into the street
  • Letting sewage or pool water flow into storm drains
Easy Ways to Help Prevent Pollution

You can make a big difference with a few simple actions:

Keep it Clean

  • Don’t dump oil, gas, paint or chemicals down storm drains
  • Take old paint, oil or cleaners to a hazardous waste drop-off site
  • Sweep leaves, grass clippings and fertilizer off sidewalks and back onto your lawn
  • Pick up pet waste and toss it in the trash

Lawn & Garden Tips

  • Use phosphorus-free fertilizer (look for a middle number of 0, like 18-0-12)
  • Water only when needed to avoid extra runoff
  • Don’t use gasoline or motor oil to kill weeds — it’s illegal and harmful
  • Use native or low-maintenance plants that need fewer chemicals

Around the Home

  • Fix oil leaks in your car — use drip pans if needed
  • Wash your car at a car wash or use biodegradable, phosphorus-free soap
  • Use rain barrels to collect roof water and reuse it on your lawn or garden
What About Rain Gardens?

Rain gardens can help soak up rainwater, but not all areas in Hastings are good spots for them. Our underground geology makes it risky for drinking water.
