PFAS and Drinking Water
What are PFAS?
PFAS are manmade chemicals that have been used since the 1940s. You can find them in things like non-stick pans, microwave popcorn bags, fast food wrappers, cosmetics and many other products. People sometimes call PFAS “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in nature.
Some PFAS are in Hastings’ wells and drinking water. We want you to know what that means for you and your family. We are working hard to keep our water safe. You can learn about the levels of PFAS and what steps the city is taking to clean up the water.
Want to learn more?
- We have a feasibility report about how we might treat the water to remove PFAS and other things like nitrates.
- If you have health questions, you can email the State of Minnesota or call 651-201-4899.
- For questions about the site work or funding, contact Kirk Koudelka or Andri Dahlmeier at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).
- For questions about Hastings’ water system or long-term plans, contact Ryan Stempski, our Public Works Director, at 651-480-2368.
