How to obtain a permit

Contact the Department of Building Safety if you have questions regarding your project and what type of permit(s) are required.

  1. Submit the permit application and required submittals.  This may be done by paper or email.  Some residential permit types that don't require plan review are available to be submitted through the Permit Portal.
  2. Review of permit application begins after complete permit application package has been submitted. You may may be contacted with questions and/or additional submittals. 
  3. Payment- We will let you know when review is complete, and the permit is ready for payment.  See Fee Schedule to determine permit fee amount.
  4. Issued permits will be emailed to you or can be picked up at City Hall.

Homeowners that are applying for a permit and doing work on their own property are required to submit a Owner Waiver with their application.

Owners working on their own property must be licensed if they build or remodel for the purpose of speculation or resale.

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) licenses contractors.  To apply for a permit companies must have a valid Contractor License on file with DLI. Check the status of a license at their iMS licensing management system .

The City of Hastings requires contractors that are not licensed by The State of MN  to hold an annual license with the city. (§150.06 Licensing Contractors).  

Contractors must submit a City Contractor License Application annually before they can apply for permits.
