Get a Dumpster

Residential Dumpster Use for Home Projects

Planning a home renovation, cleanout or construction project? You may need a dumpster to manage debris and materials. Here’s everything you need to know before renting a dumpster for your project.

Step 1: Choose a Licensed Dumpster Provider

You’ll need to rent a dumpster from a licensed waste hauler. Local waste companies can deliver directly to your home.

Tip: Ask the company about container sizes, weight limits and what materials are allowed or prohibited.

Step 2: Decide Where to Place the Dumpster

You can place a dumpster on private property (e.g. your driveway or yard)

Step 4: Follow City Guidelines

Dumpsters must:

  • Not block sidewalks, hydrants, driveways or intersections
  • Be clearly marked and visible, especially at night
  • Be removed promptly after the project ends (typically within 7–10 days)
  • Be covered or secured to prevent blowing debris

Prohibited Materials

Check with your hauler for a full list of prohibited items.

For those outside of Hastings City limits

For information regarding licensed waste haulers, please contact your township clerk. If you reside in a township within Dakota County, you may also reach out directly to a licensed waste hauler with questions about recycling, yard waste disposal, household hazardous waste, appliances or other specific items.
