A residential building permit is required for any new residential building, as well as additions to and remodeling of an existing building. Normally, electrical, plumbing, heating/air conditioning projects require additional permits.
All projects listed below require a Building Permit:
- Accessory Buildings/Detached Garages. (Note: Utility Sheds under 200 sq. ft. require a Zoning Permit)
Permits are not required for:
Cosmetic improvements such as painting, carpeting, kitchen cabinets, floor covering and normal maintenance or repairs without structural changes. Roofing, siding, decks, windows, additions, electrical, plumbing, heating are all jobs that require a permit. Questions regarding whether you need a permit should be directed to the Department of Building Safety staff.
