Block Parties
Planning a neighborhood gathering? A block party is a great way to connect with neighbors, build community and enjoy the outdoors together. The City of Hastings requires a permit for any event that involves closing a public street.
What Is a Block Party?
A block party is a neighborhood-organized event that temporarily closes a residential street for activities such as:
- Cookouts and potlucks
- Games and activities for kids
- Live music or performances
- Holiday celebrations
- Community-building events
Block parties must be private, non-commercial events organized by and for residents of the block.
Permit Requirements
To host a block party that involves closing a city street, you’ll need to:
- Submit a Block Party Permit Application
- Notify and get consent from your neighbors
- Follow city safety guidelines
- Provide proper barricades
Application Process
- Submit Application
Complete the Block Party Permit Application at least 7 (seven) business days before your event date. - Include Required Information
- Date and time of the event
- Street(s) to be closed
- Estimated number of attendees
- Name and contact information of event organizer
- Neighborhood Notification
The applicant is responsible for informing all affected neighbors. You may be asked to provide proof of notification or consent. - Approval & Barricades
Once approved, the event organizer must work with a vendor to supply barricades for the event.
Guidelines for a Safe and Fun Event
- Emergency vehicles must have access to the street(s) at all times.
- Barricades are to be removed immediately after the block party ends.
- The participants are responsible for cleaning up the street after the block party.
- All paper and cardboard, cartons, glass bottles and jars, metal cans and plastics labeled #1, #2 and #5 must be properly sorted and placed in recycling containers.
- Each trash container must have a recycling container within 10 feet. The City of Hastings provides properly labeled portable recycling and trash containers that can be checked out free of charge if your event requires additional waste containers to avoid overflow. Please contact the Solid Waste & Recycling Coordinator to reserve containers. Any additional disposal costs are the responsibility of the applicant.
- Music and noise must be kept at respectful levels.
- The Hastings Police Department has the authority to end the party.
