Summer Water Safety
Summer Water Safety
With summer temperatures rising and families heading to the water, water safety becomes an important focus for the season. Whether swimming, boating, or spending time at a pool, preparation and proper safety equipment play a key role in helping everyone enjoy the water safely.
According to Theresa Faustini, Aquatics Manager at the Hastings Family Aquatic Center, one of the most important safety measures is the use of U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. These life jackets have been tested and certified to provide reliable flotation and are designed to help keep wearers safe in and around the water.
Before visiting the Hastings Family Aquatic Center or participating in water activities, families are encouraged to inspect their life jackets by following these simple steps:
- Look for the U.S. Coast Guard approval label inside the life jacket.
- Make sure the life jacket is the correct size for the wearer.
- Check that all straps and buckles are secure and in good condition.
Families should also remember that inflatable swim aids, water wings, and other non-approved flotation devices are not substitutes for a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
The message is simple: a little preparation goes a long way. By following basic water safety practices and using approved safety equipment, families can focus on what matters most, making memories and enjoying a safe summer on and around the water.
