City Administrator Vacancy

The former Hastings City Administrator, Melanie Mesko Lee, tendered her resignation and accepted a position as City Manager in Burnsville, Minnesota. Her last day with the City of Hastings was Friday, January 4, 2019. The City Council has begun the process to fill the impending vacancy. All information from that process will be hosted here.

City Administrator Hiring Process

Monday, August 5, 2019: The Hastings City Council voted unanimously to appoint Dan Wietecha as the new City Administrator. Wietecha is currently employed as the Township Superintendent at Bath, Michigan. Wietecha will begin employment with the City of Hastings on October 7, 2019.

  • Tour with City Staff, 9-11:30 a.m.
  • Public Meet & Greet in City Hall Community Room, 4-5:30 p.m.
  • Reception with Mayor and Council Members at Fireside Social House, 6-7:30 p.m.

Saturday, July 27, 2019:

  • City Council interviews finalists at City Hall, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.


Monday, July 1, 2019: The City Council has recommended the following four candidates be named as finalists for the City Administrator position:

  • Aaron Reeves, City Administrator of City of Cloquet, MN
  • Tom Sorel, WSP USA Vice President
  • Sack Thongvanh, City Administrator of Falcon Heights, MN
  • Dan Wietecha, Township Superintendent of Bath, MI

Monday, June 3, 2019: Jim Miller from the Mercer Group, attended the City Council meeting to give an update on the City Administrator applications received and to recommend an interview process. The Mercer Group received 43 applications in total. The council will now appoint an Ad Hoc committee and choose interview dates for finalists.

Wednesday, May 1, 2019: The City Administrator recruitment profile and job description are live, and the job is officially open. This position is open until filled. Review of resumes will begin on May 31, 2019. For additional information or to apply, please contact:

Tuesday, April 3, 2019: Administrative Committee of Council met today to finalize the recruitment profile and job description for the vacant City Administrator position. The Mercer Group will move forward soon and the position will be posted for 30 days. The Committee also discussed minimum qualifications, ad placements, and the interview process. The Committee will meet next to approve the interview process at a date to be determined.

Monday, March 4, 2019: Administrative Committee of Council has recommended the Mercer Group for Executive Search Firm Services to assist with recruiting and hiring a City Administrator.

Thursday, February 21, 2019: Administrative Committee of Council met to review the Request for Proposals for an Executive Search Firm to assist in the hiring of the next City Administrator. Five proposals were received. The Committee recommended inviting three firms to interview. Interviews will be held the evening of Thursday, February 28th beginning at 5 p.m. in the Volunteer Room at City Hall. It is anticipated that the committee will make a recommendation to the full council to enter into an agreement with a firm on the March 4th council agenda.

Friday, January 4, 2019: Administrative Committee of Council to discuss CA recruitment process. This meeting was rescheduled from December 19.
