State of the City
On Tuesday, February 6th Mayor Fasbender delivered the State of the City Address at the Hastings Golf Club. The address included a video of accomplishments from 2018 as well as her vision and hopes for the City of Hastings into 2019 and beyond. View the State of the City video here.
Thank you to the Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce for organizing this event and to Dakota Electric for sponsoring the event!
Snow, Snow and More Snow!
Almost 10 inches of fluffy snow fell earlier this week—and a second round fell on Thursday. We’ve had crews out throughout the City all week long. We appreciate your patience as we work hard to clean up the sheer volume of snow.
The first round of snow emergencies this week resulted in 52 winter parking citations. A friendly reminder that a snow emergency automatically goes into effect at 2” of snow has fallen. We encourage residents to sign up for automated notification. Register to receive a text alert or phone call via our Nixle alert system.
Fire & EMS crews responded to 14 medical emergencies, two fire related calls and three separate vehicle crashes during Monday’s snow event. A huge THANK YOU to our crews who’ve put in long hours in the past few days to work to keep us safe. From Public Works to Police to Fire & EMS to Parks and Recreation—all deserve our appreciation!
The Scarlet Letter at City Hall
Beginning this weekend (lumin)theater lab will present The Scarlet Letter at Hastings City Hall in the upstairs Community Room. Fire & EMS Department
Adopt a Hydrant - don't forget to dig out your nearest fire hydrant. Firefighters need to be able to access the hydrant in case of fire. Check for ice and clear a 3' area around the hydrant and a path to the street.
Crews completed the final round of ice rescue training this past Saturday at Lake Rebecca.
The Annual Police Reserve Banquet will be held on Wednesday, March 20th at the Fireside Social House beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is a great way to recognize the exceptional service and countless hours of volunteering. RSVP by contacting Jessica Urbach at email@example.com.
Police Chief Schafer attended a Symposium on Less Lethal Force Options relative to mental illness and had the distinct honor of meeting with Los Angeles Police Chief, Michel Moore. Over 250 law enforcement officials from throughout the US, Canada, and Europe convened to discuss this issue. HPD is committed to providing tools and training to the front line to ensure we provide the best service possible when helping those in crisis.
The City has made a conditional offer of employment to Erica Henderson for the position of Deputy City Clerk. Erica is currently the Deputy City Clerk for Tonka Bay and has worked for the City of Plymouth. She recently completed her Master’s Degree in Public Administration.
The City is accepting applications from current Hastings Police Officers for the promotion to Police Sergeant until February 17th.
It certainly doesn’t feel like summer outside, but we are thinking about sun and fun! Looking for a summer job? Consider the Hastings Family Aquatic Center. Online applications for the 2019 summer season will be accepted beginning on Monday, February 11th. Apply at www.hastingsmn.gov/employment prior to March 14th. Several positions are available including guest services and lifeguard.
The Parks and Recreation Department is looking for a motivated individual for the 2019 internship position. Highway 316 Project Update
Public Works and Engineering staff have been working with our colleagues at MnDOT to get a full understanding of various funding programs and grant opportunities for which the City may be eligible to apply for in the aim of helping to close the funding gap for the upcoming (2021) Highway 316 project. Thus far, it appears that the Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP - application due March 1), and the Cooperative Construction/Local Partnership Program (application solicitation period begins in April) are leading candidates.
We are working to create information our State elected officials (Representative Jurgens and Senator Bigham) can utilize in consideration of drafting or supporting legislation that would be involved in funding these programs and/or creating other allocations that may contribute to project costs to help close the funding gap. At this time, no bills specifically into these programs or for the project specifically, have been put forth, but it is still early in the session and we remain hopeful!
City Administrator Update
Request for Proposals have been sent to five firms who have known expertise in the area of professional municipal recruitment. The Request for Proposal is also available at the League of Minnesota Cities and on our website. Proposals are due on February 13. The Administrative Committee of the Council will meet on February 21 to review the proposals and February 28 to interview selected firms.
If you are interested in learning more about the process for filling the position, we have created a page on our website with all the updates on the process as they work through the Administrative Committee of the Council (Braucks*, Folch, Lund) and the Council as a body.
