HPD Officer Earns Top Spot in Drug Recognition
Official Press Release Dated 1/12/2018:
HPD Officer Earns Top Spot in Drug Recognition Expert Training Class
The Hastings Police Department is proud to announce that HPD Officer Geoff Latsch recently graduated from Drug Recognition Expert Training school as the top student. A Drug Recognition Expert or Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) is a police officer trained to recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs other than, or in addition to, alcohol. This is proving to be extremely helpful in states that have legalized marijuana, and in incidents related to the opioid crisis. The intensive, 10-day classroom course is followed by field certification that involves evaluating actual impaired subjects.
Officer Latsch is the fourth member of the Hastings Police Department to be certified in DRE. Other members include Chief Bryan Schafer, Commander Bryan Schowalter, and Officer Ryan Kline. More info about the Hastings Police Department can be found at www.hastingsmn.gov/hpd
