City Staff springs to action in light of Target closure
Hastings, MN:

In light of the recent news of Target Corporation closing the Hastings location, the City of Hastings has been working to gather information on the decision-making process Target uses to make a store-closure determination and to prepare for the impact and opportunity this vacancy presents to the community.

The city’s Economic Development Coordinator, Morgan Hill, immediately set to work on outreach and information gathering. To date, Hill has been in contact with Greater MSP, the MN Department of Employment and Economic Development’s rapid response team, and representatives from Target Corporate Real Estate and Target Government Relations. Additionally, Hill has communicated with other communities that have gone through recent Target closures. City staff remains in close communication with the Mayor and City Council, and is working together with the Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

A morning conversation with City administration, economic development and communications staff, Kristy Barse, president of Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, and Target representatives in Corporate Real Estate and in Government Relations revealed that the Hastings Target has been under-performing for a number of years, despite a variety of adjustments made by Target. Target reiterated that they do not take these decisions lightly and they are committed to ensuring current employees of the Hastings location are offered employment at nearby stores. The Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce has also reached out to the Hastings store manager with local employment opportunities and resources for the displaced employees.

The City will continue communications with supporting agencies and Target Corporation, as well as to provide updates to the community as this process unfolds.

“While news of Target’s closing is disappointing for all of us, we are committed to focusing on finding the best fit for our community to ensure the long term success of this property,” said Mayor Paul Hicks. “I encourage local residents to support the many other Hastings businesses who have supported and invested in our community.”
